A lot of googling goes into finding women to feature on Geek Girl Boss. Reading through articles and Twitter feeds, and LinkedIn pages. There’s a lot of information to be found, but not always personality. This was not the case with Terri. It wasn’t just her down to earth tweets or resume that made me reach out and contact her. Her bio genuinely made me laugh out loud and want to know more. And with 20 years and counting in the entertainment industry, there is a lot to learn about this vocal chameleon.

Voice Actor, Director, and Author Terri Doty

Q: Origin story time – what were you doing before and what led you to this?
A: I entertained the idea of going to an acting conservatory straight out of high school. However, it was important to my family that I went to college. Until I figured out the logistics of how to both perform and appease the parental units, I started with basic college courses. I did community theater, stand-up, indie flicks and the occasional odd job when I wasn’t in class. Through these collaborations, I started writing more of my own material and directing short films. It became clear that, while I still loved acting, I wanted to learn more about “the other side.” I moved my focus from Acting to Radio/TV/Film. An internship was required when I was finishing up my degree. Options were limited. Being a gofer at the local news station or a PA at a studio didn’t appeal to me. I’d been doing bits and walla at FUNimation for a few months when an engineer recommended that I intern there. With the blessing from the Powers That Be, I got to shadow directors, writers, other actors, producers, and engineers for four months. Voice Director Christopher Bevins offered to work with me as a director soon after I graduated. A couple of seasons later, Eric Vale contacted me about writing adaptive scripts. That was nearly a decade ago. I’m now working consistently in the anime world and loving every minute of it! I’ve directed/produced some awesome projects over the years. I am also keeping busy in the home studio with audiobooks, teaching VO, writing/editing novels, and hanging with my chocolate lab Zoey.

Q: Did you have a mentor or tribe of people you turned to?
A: My husband Stephen and my bestie Sara.

Q: Name a fear or professional challenge that keeps you up at night.
A: Fear? Challenge? Singular? Not just being able to “do it all,” but doing everything well.

Q: Time management – how do you fit it all in?
A: Witchcraft… and keeping an up-to-date calendar, but mostly witchcraft.

Q: What are some key personality traits needed to do what you do?
A: Tenacity. Humility. Whimsy.

Q: What are some key personality traits needed to do what you do?
A: Tenacity. Humility. Whimsy.

Q: In moments of self-doubt or adversity, how do you build yourself back up?
A: Taking a step away from the situation never hurts. And the support system I’ve put around myself is probably the biggest motivator to dust myself off and try try again.

Q: In your opinion, what are the top three things someone should consider before starting a career in this industry?
A: 1. Do your research before spending money on ANYTHING (classes, headshots, gear, etc.).
2. Be open to critique/feedback.
3. Be patient. Success doesn’t happen overnight.

Q: What was the best piece of professional advice you were given when you were starting out (or a piece of advice you’re glad you ignored)?
A: Anything easily gained can just as easily be lost.

Q: Knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently when you were first starting out?
A: I wouldn’t have stressed about things completely out of my control. Well, not as much anyway. In the beginning, it was so easy to feel rushed when I decided to take this path, but it didn’t help anything. It had quite the opposite effect.
